چکیده

The Jatadharmohan creek lies between Mahanadi and Devi Rivers along the Orissa coast and it is separated from the sea by an elongated sand spit. It was proposed to mine a volume of 15 x 10 m of sand from the creek for land filling, but maintaining the spit intact. For this, the stability of sand spit is studied with different criteria. The results confirm that the creek mouth is a near permanent zone of deposition. The model results obtained for various depth scenarios show that the magnitude of currents would increase considerably when depth is increased by 7.0m and marginally for further increase in depth by 10.0m. Accordingly, a dredging scheme has to be designed without affecting the spit stability. Considering the existing hydrodynamics in the creek system, it is recommended that a bed slope of 1:6 (9.5°) be maintained during dredging, which is much less than 13.75° the evaluated critical slope at the site when seepage flow is parallel to the bed slope. It is observed during monitoring that the creek is very productive, and the sand spit is

Camp Ellis , Maine : A Small Beach Community with a Big Problem / Jetty

This paper is a case history of coastal development in Camp Ellis, Saco, Maine. It begins in 1867 with dredging and jetty construction at the mouth of the Saco River to facilitate commercial navigation. Beach accretion resulting from tidal delta collapse was developed with residences before its ephemeral nature was recognized. Misunderstanding of the riverine source of beach sand and the net, n...

Patterns of Sand Spit Development and Their Management Implications on Deltaic, Drift-Aligned Coasts: The Cases of the Senegal and Volta River Delta Spits, West Africa

The sand spits associated with the Volta and Senegal River deltas, the two largest river deltas in West Africa, after that of the Niger River, show complex patterns of morphodynamic development while also strongly reflecting the recent impacts of human activities. The large spit of the Volta delta seems to be a direct outgrowth of a natural change in the location of the mouth of the Volta and o...

Residence Times in a Hypersaline Creek: Using Salinity as a Tracer

Spatial measurements of conductivity, temperature and depth were used to study salinity variations along the principal channels of the tidal hypersaline creek network in the vicinity of Bushehr Port, Persian Gulf during three 25- tidal cycles in both warm and cold months. Salinity variations and tidal fluctuations were out of phase throughout the short inverse estuary. The salinity values in...

An Investigation into the Performance of Excavation with Inclined Struts Connected to Adjacent Buildings

One practical excavation support system is the inclined struts connected to adjacent buildings. This method is very common in small excavations, because of simplicity and minimum cost, when soil is cohesive and depth of excavation is less than stability depth (Hcr) but adjacent structures is at risk of damage due to weakness, old age or lack of proper skeleton frame. Although this method ...
